Southern California Birth Photographer Heather J. Potter to Team up with The Yellow Ribbon Birth Project Nationwide Organization
I was contacted by Jenna Bush, Founder of The Yellow Ribbon Birth Project this week. She runs a non-profit nationwide organization which provides expecting active duty military spouses who have deployed spouses at the time of the birth of their child, or who have made the ultimate sacrifice, with support and encouragement both during and after labor and delivery. Their mission is fulfilled through the donated services from birth and postpartum doulas, birth photographers, and lactation educators and/or consultants.
As most of you are aware, I am a avid supporter of our military as I spent most of my adult life being a Marine Corps spouse. Giving back to the one community that supported me since the tender age of 18 has always been a true blessing. I was asked if I would donate my birth photography services to those in need, my response ... I WOULD BE HONORED to provide Birth Photography to our military families.
If you are interested in learning more about the opportunities being put together by The Yellow Ribbon Birth Project Organization, please check out their website. There are specific forms you will need to submit in order to be put on the list and to have birth professionals matched up with your particular location and situation.
Please be sure to let Jenna and the other staff at The Yellow Ribbon Birth Project know that Heather Potter of Heather J. Potter Photography referred you. If you are within Southern California, I will most likely be a part of your birthing team as I will be offering Birth Photography as I am available.
Please be sure to pass this blog and information onto those Military Families you know of all around the US, you never know who might want a little extra support during their birthing process.
Have a blessed day,
Heather J. Potter

The video and pictures below are from my most recent "Day in the Life" session with a beautiful mom and daughter. Christi is the wife to an amazing Chef in San Diego, mother to 2 gorgeous daughters and one of the most sought after full-time restaurant manager in San Diego. This beautiful lady works around the clock and because of her industry doesn't get much time with her little girl Alana. Alana is one of the smartest little kindergartners I know! She is by far also one of the most energetic and loving little girls too. Christi like most working moms and dads struggles with the fact that she isn't able to be with her family as much as she would like.
When Christi isn't putting out flames at work, running an entire restaurant and carpooling daily she is able to finally have a day off ... when she isn't doing regular mom and wife chores, she goes all out for her beautiful little girl. From breakfast together at Cafe Topez in Carlsbad to seeing the box office smash "Cinderella" at the Regal Cinemas Carlsbad 12 theater. She tops of the morning with a little trip to the Disney Store at the Carlsbad mall where her beautiful little girl falls head over heels for a Cinderella dress that was made just for her!
Have you ever thought to yourself "now these are the moments I want captured", but you've been the one stuck behind the camera or worse the iPhone camera! If you've got kids or loved ones that you enjoy interacting with, playing with or sharing stories with then I'm sure you are shaking your head in agreeance.
I find myself going through old pictures of my daughters younger years and realizing I'm not in many of them. Why, well clearly I'm the photographer in the family! But like most moms and dads we tend to be the one taking the photos so we aren't in any of the photos with our kids and other loved ones.
This is why I have fallen in love with Modern Storytelling through photography. I take a journalistic approach while capturing true raw moments that happen in your day to day life.
If you are interested in having a Modern Storytelling Portrait Experience, contact Heather J. Potter Photography.

When I got a message from Kayla asking if I was still available to help capture some Chrismtas portraits for her and her husband, my instant reply was "For sure!".
Her husband just returned from a 1 year deployment overseas and Kayla has been working extremely hard at finishing her nursing degree as well as being a "gym rat". She recently lost 55 pounds! So not only did she get the love of her life back, she's feeling amazing to boot.
There session was so much fun, who knew Samuel was such a crafty guy. He wrapped and hung picture frames within the trees as well as cute ornaments. He made a "Coal" burlap sac for Kayla to use in their portrait session too! Check out the photo below, YEP Samuel made it.
They clearly had a vision and we were running with it. Even their dogs Zues and Titan got in on the action. They loved having their photos taken. They even got to go chase the birds in the bark (opps!).
Their love for each other came jump off the screen as I went through their session to edit it. I could help but stay up and continue to edit their session. I hope you enjoy some of the images as much as I do.
If you are looking for Chrismtas portraits, it's not too late to book with me. Let's meet up and capture your families true spirit and love for each other. Step away from the portrait studio line at Sears and step outside with me. Let's get to creating memories your family will look back on years from now.
Have a blessed day,
As as San Diego County area photography, I have over 18 years of experience working with Military families, commands and units within the San Diego County area during Military Homecomings, Promotion and Retirement Ceremonies, Holiday Parties, and other special events.
Over the years I have had the pleasure of working side by side with several commands as their preferred homecoming and event photographer. Besides being a military spouse for over 17 years, I have also volunteered my time as a Family Readiness Assistant during several of my spouses deployments. I personally know what it's like waiting for your loved ones to return home from deployment. I am here to offer not only my professional services but my support as well.
Whether you need a photographer to capture your spouse or family members first military homecoming or their last. I have had the pleasure of photographing many military homecoming sessions within the last couple of years aboard Camp Pendleton, San Diego Naval Yard and Miramar.
I'm here to not only help you photograph your next Military Homecoming Session but any and all Military related events and ceremonies. I have experience photographing special military events and ceremonies to include: special award events, military commissioning ceremonies, military graduations, as well as reenlistment and new rank ceremonies.
Having a professional photographer at your event will all you and your family to sit back and enjoy the special events and moments in your life. When you hire me to be your professional photographer you won't miss out on the entire experience and you'll be sure to have beautiful photographs from the event to share with your family and friends for many years to come.
I take great pride in my work as I photograph such life changing events and would be honored to be your event photographer during your families special military related events.
Please complete the form below to request additional information. Please be sure to give only details you are allowed to release, I will contact you via phone for more specific details pertaining your upcoming event.
Have a blessed day,
I had the honor of photographing Jim and Sue Phelps family portraits at the very beautiful Encintas Moonlight Beach. Their daughter Emily contacted me in regards to getting an entire family portrait done as they hadn't been able to do so in many years. There would be Jim, Sue, their daughter Emily and her family, their daughter Megan and her family as well as their son Doug to photograph.
With a family of 13 people, I knew this was going to be fun. We ran around the beach, kicking a ball, dodging the waves and trying desperately to get little Aiden and Carter to smile at the same time for us.
I loved photograph Emily, her husband Chris, their 3 year old son Mason, and their 1 year old twin boys Aiden and Carter loved the ocean. Running around gathering rocks and kick their red ball were the highlight of their afternoon photo session.
Thankful for Doug, Jim and Sue's son for helping me coral the young boys several times during their session. I was even able to get the boys to all sit down and do a photo with their Uncle Doug.
I was overjoyed to see that Megan, her husband Scott, their sons Cameron and Brett and daughter Emilee had brought a Christmas sign that read "JOY". It was really big and bright RED .... as you all know, I LOVE LOVE LOVE props. It makes a session so much fun and when clients bring their own, it adds a fun personal touch.

I am very excited and honored to have been selected to work with Capturing Hopes Photography a non-profit organization that offers photography assistance to families with babies and children in the NICU as well as those living in the Ronald McDonald House of Winston Salem.
Because Capturing Hopes Photography is based on the East Coast, they reached out to me directly when they received a request from a family that is here in the San Diego area. The family has two beautiful little girls who are in the NICU at Kaiser Zion Hospital, San Diego. Because the babies can't leave the hospital just yet, I will be going directly to them in order to help capture their first professional newborn portraits. This is something the family has been wanting and waiting to be able to do since they were born. I feel honored to be able to help such this family.
If you or anyone you know have babies in the NICU or families that are at Ronald McDonald House within the San Diego County area, please let me know. I would like to be able to offer them a portrait session free of charge. I know this time in their life is precious and being able to capture the memories and moments are priceless.
Please pass this blog onto your family and friends as I would like to spread the word, if this becomes bigger than something I can not do alone, I will be reaching out to the community for support to include recruiting other photographers to join in my mission to give back through photography.
*UPDATE: Because I have already began to receive incredible feedback, I have started the process of creating a non-profit organization called "Paying It Forward Photography". As I pull everything together, I will post updates here and on the Paying It Forward Photography website.
I will be reaching out to the community for support to include recruiting other photographers to join in my mission to give back through photography.

The All American Family
As a photographer I strive daily to continue learning my craft while pushing the creative envelope. I will be starting a personal project of my own called "The All American Family".
I will be looking for those wishing to be a part of this project. Here's the kicker, I would like to work with those who have "Non-Traditional" families. Those wishing to be a part of my personal project will receive a free portrait session.
Why "Non-Traditional" families?
Because I myself came from a non-traditional family. I grew up in a Blended Family. I had 2 moms and a dad. My biological parents were married for a short time, divorced and my father remarried. My biological mother had (2) sons and (1) daughter from a previous marriage before my dad, then had me. When my father remarried, his new wife had (2) sons from her previous marriage. Needless to say, I had a lot of siblings! Try explaining all of them to your friends at school, it wasn't always easy. I tended to draw out a lot of diagrams.
I get asked a lot by expecting moms "When do I start looking for a photographer" and "When do I book a maternity photoshoot".
My first response is ... It's never too early to pre-book your session wth your photographer.
Here's some keys things to keep in mind.
1. Start looking at portfolios of photographers you are interested in working with.
2. Make sure their style fits yours.
3. Make sure the have professional equipment and know how to use it.
Many "photographers" claim to be professional yet aren't.
Keeping in mind, maternity portraits along with newborn and first family portraits are not replaceable, you'll only be pregnant 1 time with you little one. Don't take the chance on missing those magical moments.
Book early as photographers only have so much availability, most photographers will gladly get you on their schedule as soon as you are ready to pick a date and time. Most good photographers are booked at least a month in advance, unless they have a cancelation.
Get to know your photographer. Ask them as many questions as you can, check out their portfolio, then look for images that you like and share those images with your photographer.
Being able to know what you like and dislike is key. If you know you like super crisp images and you don't like the dreamy look, tell your photographer.
Remember your portrait session will only be that much better if everyone communicates their needs and wants.
And don't forget ... HAVE FUN! Maternity sessions along with newborn and family portrait sessions are meant to be fun and memorable.
Have a blessed day and happy searching. Enjoy your pregnancy!
