What To Wear:
Try to avoid:
The video and pictures below are from my most recent "Day in the Life" session with a beautiful mom and daughter. Christi is the wife to an amazing Chef in San Diego, mother to 2 gorgeous daughters and one of the most sought after full-time restaurant manager in San Diego. This beautiful lady works around the clock and because of her industry doesn't get much time with her little girl Alana. Alana is one of the smartest little kindergartners I know! She is by far also one of the most energetic and loving little girls too. Christi like most working moms and dads struggles with the fact that she isn't able to be with her family as much as she would like.
When Christi isn't putting out flames at work, running an entire restaurant and carpooling daily she is able to finally have a day off ... when she isn't doing regular mom and wife chores, she goes all out for her beautiful little girl. From breakfast together at Cafe Topez in Carlsbad to seeing the box office smash "Cinderella" at the Regal Cinemas Carlsbad 12 theater. She tops of the morning with a little trip to the Disney Store at the Carlsbad mall where her beautiful little girl falls head over heels for a Cinderella dress that was made just for her!
Have you ever thought to yourself "now these are the moments I want captured", but you've been the one stuck behind the camera or worse the iPhone camera! If you've got kids or loved ones that you enjoy interacting with, playing with or sharing stories with then I'm sure you are shaking your head in agreeance.
I find myself going through old pictures of my daughters younger years and realizing I'm not in many of them. Why, well clearly I'm the photographer in the family! But like most moms and dads we tend to be the one taking the photos so we aren't in any of the photos with our kids and other loved ones.
This is why I have fallen in love with Modern Storytelling through photography. I take a journalistic approach while capturing true raw moments that happen in your day to day life.
If you are interested in having a Modern Storytelling Portrait Experience, contact Heather J. Potter Photography.

Modern Storytelling through photography has become by far my favorite type of session, besides newborns and birth sessions.
I love being able to photograph families in the comfort of their home, doing something they love doing. Interacting with each other and not worrying about me being in the room with a camera.
The video below is during a baby bump painting session. With every hand print made, I knew this family was bonding and creating memories that will for ever be remembered. It was a true blessing to be able to capture each moment as it passed by.
Special thanks to The Painted Oven for creating such a beautiful masterpiece.

I had the true honor and pleasure of photographing a Lifestyle Maternity Session for my beautiful dear friends that are expecting twins this January. These are not regular twins, these are beautiful little #RainbowTwins. More on Rainbow Twins below!
Ruthii of "The Painted Oven" was on hand to paint a beautiful cloud scene Cris' baby bump. She painted each family members hands and placed each hand print on mama Cris' baby bump. It was a beautiful way to include the kids into the miracle of this pregnancy.
Cris has successfully carried and delivered 4 wonderful children, who I have personally watched over the years grow into amazing kids. Sadly, over the past several years, Cris and her husband have endured 4 pregnancy losses. This amazing family has waited a long time for their rainbow babies. Their faith in the Lord, their family and their marriage have keep these two stronger than any couple I have met to date.
What is a Rainbow Baby?
A "rainbow baby" is a baby that is born following a miscarriage or still birth.
A beautiful and bright rainbow follows a storm and gives hope of things getting better. The rainbow is more appreciated having just experienced the storm in comparison.
The storm (pregnancy loss) has already happened and nothing can change that experience. Storm-clouds might still be overhead as the family continue to cope with the loss, but something colorful and bright has emerged from the darkness and misery.
If you would like to schedule a Lifestyle Maternity Session and have your baby bump painted and photographed, please let me know.
I had the true honor and pleasure of photographing Hellen on Sunday, September 21st. She entered and won my "Free Maternity Portrait Session". When I told her she won she couldn't believe it. In fact, she told her friend "This can't be real, I don't win anything". She was such a sweetheart and willing to go to great lengths to help us capture beautiful sunset maternity portraits for her.
Hellen is from a small town called Lone Pine. Her and her boyfriend met each other while being stationed together in Southern California. Get this, they are BOTH United States Marines! Hellen is currently stationed in Southern California. Sadly her boyfriend will be missing not only the birth of their first child, but also the first 5 months of her life as he is currently deployed. Though it has been hard having her boyfriend deployed during her first pregnancy, Hellen is comforted by his phone calls and emails. He always has a way of cheering her up and making her day better.
I don't know about you, but I think Hellen looks amazing. Does she even look like she's 33 weeks pregnant! I couldn't believe it either, but she is. I personally know that I can't wait for her to share these beautiful portraits with her boyfriend, family and friends!
I hope you all enjoy the images, please feel free to share the. Be sure to check me out on social media!
Have a blessed day,
Heather J. Potter Photography
A Maternity portrait session allows you to take the time out of your busy schedule and embrace the fact that you are about to be a mommy, either for the first time or again! Either way, it's a time to celebrate and feel beautiful. It's a fantastic opportunity to creatively document your growing belly and your beautiful pregnant glow. Being able to look back on your beautiful maternity portraits is an incredible feeling, the time goes quickly and you'll soon be holding your little bundle of joy!
I typically get asked "When Do I Hire A Maternity Photographer?" (read blog for additional information) . Typically the best time for your Maternity Portrait Session would be some where between 32 and 38 weeks, unless you are carrying multiples. I always suggest that moms having multiples schedule their Maternity Portrait Session around 25-30 weeks. As you get farther along in your pregnancy, being able to move around freely can sometimes be restricted, because of this be sure to schedule your Maternity Portrait Session long before you get to be 32 weeks along (25 for multiples).
Your Maternity Portrait Sessions can be held at an offsite location of your choice. I typically suggest local parks, beaches and even some non-traditional places like downtown which offer some pretty amazing backdrops for your session.
The next biggest questions I get asked is "Heather, what am I even going to wear!?". I suggest the following to my maternity clients. Wear lighter colors with neutral tons such as tan, grey, beige and cream. They tend to work best for your maternity session and it doesn't matter the location either. Add a splash of bold color to your session with a special necklace or scarf. It's best to stick with fitted tops, long skirts that are flowing. Many different options out there, check out my "What To Wear During A Maternity Session" blog! Plus - I have several Maternity Gowns you are more than welcome to use during your session. If you have any specifics for your session, please share them with me. I will be more than happy to help accommodate your needs.
I offer a special portrait bundle for those wishing to capture this time in with a Belly to Baby Portrait package. Book a Belly to Baby package and receive a discount rate. Please ask any questions you may have and know that a custom package can be created for you and your family.

How To Know Your Friends a Birth, Newborn, or a Child Photographer
I read a blog about "13 Things Your Should Know About Being Married to a Wedding Photographer". The things said were surprisingly right on point! I specialize in Maternity, Birth, Newborn and Family portraits. Here's a list compiled with ways you know your Best Friend is either a Birth, Newborn, or Child Portrait Photographer.
25 Fun Things That Will Prove to You That Your Best Friend (or Spouse) is a Maternity, Birth, Newborn, and Family Portrait Photographer!
1. Your friends "daily" wardrobe" consists of yoga pants, converse and tank tops.
2. Your friends laundry room is stacked with backdrops and blankets that are covered in newborn "mess".
3. When you go shopping, your friend picks up everything she can fit a baby into. No basket is left upturn!
4. That super cute knitted sweater and scarf you got her for Christmas? It will most likely be turned into an even cuter DIY Knit Cap and Legging Set.
5. She really digs random fuzzy blankets and random large baskets, they make amazing gifts.
6. That wood bowl is a newborn prop, it's NOT a decoration please do not touch it.
7. The really "cool" camera that is pretty much glued to her hip, do NOT touch it. Not even when you are kidding.
8. If you see your friend pacing back and forth in front of the mailbox, trust me she's expecting a new prop! When it doesn't come, be supportive. When it does come, be excited for her!
9. And if you think you are impressed that she hasn’t gotten anything in the mail in a while, better check her friend’s houses.
10. Your friend will constantly be doing laundry, if you can't figure why, see #2.
11. And please, never ever try and wash her newborn props in the washing machine.
12. Your friend will try and convince you that she knows how to knit and make props herself.
13. Your friends backyard has been turned into an "out door studio", complete with a DIY Lemonade Stand.
14. Your friend will use words like; squishy babies, froggy pose, taco pose and flokati’s. Which you clearly have no idea what those are but you will hear about them often. Pretend to be excited.
15. You are completely accepting of the fact that your friend gets pooped on at work and may sometimes not even realize it's on her when she meets you for coffee.
16. Perk, your friend if given enough notice will always be there for all of your photography needs.
17. When you hang out at your friends house before or after a newborn session, it maybe about 90 degrees in her home.
18. I promise your friend really does want to know about how your day went, it's just that .... Did you SEE the adorable newborn that she photographed today! Hurry up and check Facebook and be sure to like it!
19. Your friend will be up at all hours of the night, going to bed at 3am isn't abnormal.
20. Don't judge her when she's sitting at her computer in pajamas or yoga pants it's part of the job. She can multitask, yes being on Facebook and editing at the same time can happen and clearly does.
21. Your friend is made up of 80% coffee, 10% baby pee, and 10% sleep.
22. Don’t be alarmed if she's shopping for baby blankets, booties, and bonnets. It's a part of the job, no she's NOT pregnant. Don't even ask!
23. What ever you do, do NOT ask her “How much did that cost?” in front of her spouse.
24. Your friend will have issues with her back and complain about knee pain on a regular bases. A gift certificate for a massage would make an amazing gift if you don't want to add to her addicting prop collection.
25. If you really want to take your friend out on the town, take her antique shopping!
I hope you enjoyed this awesome list. If you like it, share it! Have something to add to the list? Comment below!

I get asked a lot by expecting moms "When do I start looking for a photographer" and "When do I book a maternity photoshoot".
My first response is ... It's never too early to pre-book your session wth your photographer.
Here's some keys things to keep in mind.
1. Start looking at portfolios of photographers you are interested in working with.
2. Make sure their style fits yours.
3. Make sure the have professional equipment and know how to use it.
Many "photographers" claim to be professional yet aren't.
Keeping in mind, maternity portraits along with newborn and first family portraits are not replaceable, you'll only be pregnant 1 time with you little one. Don't take the chance on missing those magical moments.
Book early as photographers only have so much availability, most photographers will gladly get you on their schedule as soon as you are ready to pick a date and time. Most good photographers are booked at least a month in advance, unless they have a cancelation.
Get to know your photographer. Ask them as many questions as you can, check out their portfolio, then look for images that you like and share those images with your photographer.
Being able to know what you like and dislike is key. If you know you like super crisp images and you don't like the dreamy look, tell your photographer.
Remember your portrait session will only be that much better if everyone communicates their needs and wants.
And don't forget ... HAVE FUN! Maternity sessions along with newborn and family portrait sessions are meant to be fun and memorable.
Have a blessed day and happy searching. Enjoy your pregnancy!
